More than 100 attendees were present at the UDEC/3DEC Symposium September 30-October 2, 2004, in Bochum, Germany. In addition to the excellent opportunity to share ideas and experience in the use of UDEC and 3DEC in engineering practice and science, those in attendance also received:
- the conference proceedings a valuable resource in examining the state-of-the-art in numerical modeling via distinct element methods
- an advance preview copy of UDEC 4.0, with substantial new features including a graphical user interface that provides visual access to all program functions and commands
The UDEC/3DEC Symposium was the first-ever gathering of a large assembly of users to describe and discuss the wide variety of problems to which UDEC and 3DEC may be applied. Symposium sessions covered engineering applications and theoretical developments in topic areas that included: masonry structures; tunnels and caverns; mining and waste repositories; general geomechanics; rock reinforcements; and, slopes, dams, and foundations. The topics of the symposium are contained in the symposium proceedings, Numerical Modeling of Discrete Materials, edited by edited by symposium organizer Heinz Konietzky.

Itasca will host the first-ever FLAC/DEM Conference on August 25-27, 2008 in Minneapolis. The conference will feature topics and discussions covering the spectrum of Itasca software: FLAC, FLAC3D, UDEC, 3DEC, PFC2D, and PFC3D. Where past Itasca-sponsored conferences have limited their scope to a single 2D/3D code pair, this conference, in considering all the codes, will offer a complete look at the state of numerical modeling with Itasca software.
The Symposium will be held at The Depot Minneapolis, A Renaissance Hotel located at 225 3rd Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55401. On August 24, the day preceding the start of the conference, three one-day short courses will be offered on FLAC/FLAC3D, UDEC/3DEC, and PFC2D/PFC3D. The symposium is hosted by Itasca Consulting Group Inc. Dr. Christine Detournay, Dr. Roger Hart, and Ms. Michele Nelson are the conference organizers.
